Knights shut out Willits 5-0 in Coastal Mountain Conference opener at Willits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

WILLITS >> Five matches and five straight-set wins for the Kelseyville High School tennis team in its season and Coastal Mountain Conference opener against the Willits Wolverines on Tuesday afternoon in Willits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelseyville coasted to a 5-0 conference win, dropping a grand total of five games in the 10 sets played.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a nice, stress-free way to start the season,\u201d Kelseyville head coach Andy Dobusch said. \u201cWillits is a young, developing team. We\u2019re returning almost all players from last year\u2019s strong roster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maddy Borghesani, runner-up in the girls singles bracket at last year\u2019s CMC Championships, beat Karina Velazco 6-0, 6-0 in first singles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA nice clean match,\u201d Dobusch said. \u201cShe was never tested.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olivia Bushey, a sophomore, played the first singles match of her high school career and scored a 6-0, 6-0 victory in second singles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe\u2019s a different player than last season,\u201d Dobusch said. \u201cShe has much stronger ground strokes and serves. It\u2019s clicking for her and she\u2019s got two more years to play. It makes me happy to be the coach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Riley Lopez defeated Lissbeth Hernandez 6-1, 6-1 in third singles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe was knocking some rust off because of a late start due to basketball, but still a solid performance,\u201d Dobusch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In first doubles, Riley Hanson and Grace Peterson beat Sofia Vaccaaro and Alieah Barragan 6-0, 6-0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnother pair of promising sophomores took care of business,\u201d Dobusch said. \u201cBoth are really quick players that can get to most balls. More consistent ground strokes and these two will be a tough out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In second doubles, Brookyn Young and Gemma Tanti defeated April Villegas and Alisson Raya 6-2, 6-1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFinishing off the slew of sophomores, Gemma and Brooklyn both had solid performances,\u201d Dobusch said. \u201cThey were just all-around stronger and more consistent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
