MIDDLETOWN >> Obsidian Middle School\u2019s A boys basketball team beat Middletown Middle School 37-19 in its season opener Wednesday at Middletown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richard Occhino led the Bears with nine points and Alexander Calderon had seven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe came out kind of flat, but had a good second quarter as a unit,\u201d head coach Josh Benfante said. \u201cI was happy with our energy and effort in the second half from everyone as a whole. The defense stepped up big time for us tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obsidian\u2019s next game is Jan. 26 against Mountain Vista in Kelseyville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In girls middle school action Wednesday:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mountain Vista A 41, Obsidian A 31<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Clearlake, Samaya Ellis scored 15 points and Jodeci Meadows finished with 11 as the Mountain Vista Middle School A team beat Obsidian A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mountain Vista, now 6-1 in league play and 11-4 overall, took a 20-15 lead into halftime. Starting the second half in a press defense, the Lancers pushed their lead to nine points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the fourth the game fluctuated some, but the Lancers maintained their composure down the stretch,\u201d Mountain Vista head coach Shaun Robinson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audrey Panella scored seven points for the Lancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mountain Vista holds its eighth-grade night Wednesday at home with a non-league game against Anderson Valley. On Jan. 26, the Lancers travel to Middletown for their final league game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upper Lake A 31, Terrace A 29<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Lakeport, Cassie Candelario-Gamez finished with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, but the Terrace Vikings still lost to the Upper Lake Wildcats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avery Perry also had seven points for Terrace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe girls played well,\u201d Terrace head coach Jose Villela said \u201cWe tend to start slow and play catch-up, and we came up short. The girls showed toughness and made it a game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Terrace B 18, Upper Lake B 12<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olivia Rose and Alyssa Erlandson scored eight points apiece to lift the Terrace B team past Upper Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gracelyn Rose anchored the Terrace defense, according to head coach Louie Sanchez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
